Corrective Surgery Program
In 1998, ACWP first developed the Corrective Surgery Program (CSP), in partnership with Hue Medical School and General Hospital,  to help the poor, disabled children in Central Vietnam.  Most often, the children registered for these services are victims of childhood illnesses which have left these children with reduced or limited mobility.  Other children also served under CSP are those born with birth defects such as cleft palate, cleft lip, club foot, deformity of arms/legs, conditions which are medically correctable, but financially unobtainanble for most parents.  The cost of surgery, treatment, and hospitalization deters most parents.

As a result, many of these children are stigmatized, socially isolated, and emotionally withdrawn due to their physical disabilities.  CSP has provided these children with the opportunity to receive corrective treatment for their physical misshapenness.   The objective is to help the child to overcome their physical handicap and gives them a chance for normalcy.

Solution

ACWP’s Corrective Surgery Program  seeks individual sponsorships from donors for each child enrolled in this program.  A donation of $200 USD will typically help one child, depends on non-complexity of situation which, includes one surgery and some financial assistance for the child and his/her family.   The additional financial assistance plays a critical role in  the success of the child's treatment as it supplements the family's lost wages during the child's hospitalization, as well as covering costs of food, travel, and dietary supplements which the child needs during and post surgery.

Following the corrective surgery, ACWP medical staff continues to monitor the overall condition of the child, and provides a report and recommendations to ACWP Board and its sponsor for further assistance, if needed.  Typical past cases which required further support have included lodging, nutrition, physical therapy, counseling, education, and/or vocational training.

Regardless whether surgery is possible, in many situations the family has incurred extreme hardships to arrive at the ACWP office seeking aid for their child.  In these circumstances, the local ACWP-Vietnam staff would always reimburse to help pay travel costs to these families.

In other major types of surgeries, sponsorships can help pay for child’s meals during the hospital stay from 20 to 40 days.  Families who live too far from the hospitals are also provided with additional supports and financial assistance to pay for the travel costs for multiple trips to the hospital during and after the surgery.

Facts

To date, ACWP has sponsored corrective surgery and rehabilitation for over 900 children in the City of Hue and its surrounding areas of Central Region and South Vietnam.  Occasionally, ACWP would have brought the CSP to rural areas and provided on-site corrective surgery but only for minor and simple cases of clefts lips referred by our Doctors and medical staff during ACWP's medical out-reach trips under the Mobile Healthcare Program (MHP) in Central Region of Viet Nam.  However, due to ACWP’s limited medical assistants and resources in South Viet Nam, surgery will only be arranged and performed at Hospital nearest to where the patient(s) live.

Since 2003, other international NGOs such as Operation Smile and the Smile Train have stepped up their efforts in providing corrective surgery for disadvantaged children with cleft palate and hare lips. As a result, ACWP has shifted its focus and increased funding for other congenital defects such as curved arm or leg, burns or other forms of deformity.   In the coming years, ACWP plans to collaborate with other medical and international NGO groups in Vietnam and extend Corrective Surgery Program to Cambodia and other areas through out Vietnam.
